In this issue, we return to our series on great violinists, with a package (19-27) that includes a profile of the late Fiddle Govindaswamy Pillai and articles on his associate Marungapuri Gopalakrishna Iyer and disciple Papa K. S. Venkataramiah. Reports on Tyagaraja aradhana celebrations in several places find a special place in the News & Notes section this time (7-10). The reports are complemented by an article on Tyagaraja & Tamil (28). Also included are news articles on two AII-India music meets, the Sahitya Kala Parishad's Yuva Mahotsava in Delhi and the Kala Mandir dance festival in Madras. There is too a report on a Dialogue between Critics and Dancers.
S. Ramanathan : A Life of Total Immersion (29-30) is a tribute to his memory. It is based on a chronicle of 'a day' in his life written in Tamil by S. Kulandaiswamy. For dance enthusiasts, V.A.K. Ranga Rao is back with yet another instalment of Dance Is A Many Splendoured Thing But. . . and this time he takes a good look at the famous pada varnam in Sankarabharanam, Manavi chekonarada (31-32).
Sruti has from time to time been picking up threads from past articles in a column appropriately called Reprise. This time tavil artist Iluppoor Panjami and Jalatarangam Appaswamy are the musicians featured in this column.
