In this Issue

One half of this issue, which comes with extra pages, is devoted to the Madras Season, the festival of festivals which has no parallel elsewhere in the country. The special feature focusses on the madness of it all and its immediate and long-range adverse consequences, while offering comments on the contents of several programmes and the competence of a number of performers. There are news items as well as humorous articles and cartoons.

And, as a bonus, the feature includes a paean of praise to the festival season from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha and a cry of anguish from a musician-observer. News & Notes occupy virtually the rest of the issue, barring of course the space taken up by Sruti Box. There is special attention on two reports- one on a festival-cum-seminar held in Delhi, and the other on a theatrical presentation in New York- which focus attention on foreigners who have taken up Indian dance seriously. The cover photograph of Janaki Patrik by Frank Gimpaya highlights this aspect of the coverage.
