Raagam Sisters - V. Sivaranjani and V. Nalinakanthi

The portals of Carnatic music were open to the Raagam sisters from early childhood with an illustrious musical lineage and a passionate ear for melody. Mayuram Viswanatha Sastry, renowned vaggeyakara and author of the famous song 'Jayathi Jayathi Bharata Matha,' is their maternal grandfather. The Sisters were initially trained in Carnatic vocal music by their mother Kamala Venkataraman, one of the Therazhundur Sisters and Mudikondan Krishnamurthy. Later, they became disciples of S. Rajam.
Sivaranjani, the elder of the sisters is an engineer, and Nalinakanthi, the younger of the sisters is a financial journalist. Their debut performance at the age of 13 and 9 brought recognition for their talent and since then, the Sisters have been giving performances in all reputed music organizations throughout the country. They are acclaimed for their perfect synchronisation as a duo and their varied repertoire.
Being graded artistes of All India Radio, they perform frequently on radio and television and also have a number of albums to their credit. They were awarded the title 'Senthamizh Vaanigal' in appreciation of their flawless rendering of Tamil and also for the prominence given to rendering Tamil compositions in their concerts. Other titles conferred on them include 'Sangeetha Paer Arasigal', 'Raaga Varshini', 'Best Female Vocalists' award for the December Music Season 2004-05 and 'Best Raga Alapana' award for the December Music Season 2007-08 by The Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai, and 'Yuva Kala Bharathi' for the year 2007-08 by Bharath Kalachar, Chennai.
