Music Academy Dance Review - Vaibhav Arekar & Group

A synchronised Ensemble: Nibandhana's Performance

Led by the seasoned Vaibhav Arekar, Nibandhana's presentation was a delightful blend of tradition and innovation. The performance began with an alarippu composed by Guru Bharadwaj, setting the tone for the rest of the recital.

The first segment, titled Prakasam, depicted the grandeur of Tillai Stalam, the mystical Chidambara Rahasyam, and the temple’s intricate sculptures. The choreography beautifully portrayed Kanaka Sabha with the composition Ananda Natana Prakasam.

Next was a jatiswaram in ragamalika, where the group choreography and formations stood out, though the section could have benefitted from fewer repetitions.

The centrepiece of the evening was a varnam in Bhairavi raga, Mohamaana En Meedhu, performed by Vaibhav’s disciples. The dancers showcased evident effort and dedication, though their stage presence and experience are still evolving. The signature slow-paced movements characteristic of Vaibhav's style were prominent, and the group choreography, formations, and synchronisation kept the audience visually engaged. Shashank’s thoughtful lighting design added depth, while vocalist Karthik Hebbar shone during the concluding charanam with a captivating ragamalika segment.

The second half of the margam began with an ashtapadi, Priye Charusheele, which was rich in sringaram. The performance concluded with a tillana in Brindavani a composition of vidwan M. Balamuralikrishna, this exit was remarkable. Though one wished to see more of Vaibhav himself on stage, the overall presentation was fresh, well-synchronised.
