Music Appreciation Notes - Yadukulakambhoji Raga

There is at least one song in the raga Yadukulakambhoji which is sure to have been heard many times by those who listen to Carnatic music and those who see Bharatanatyam performances. And that is Marimutha Pillai's invocation to the Lord of Dance himself, Kalai tooki ninru adum deivamey. There are several others, which are also well-known and popular, set in this ancient raga which is replete with bhava.
Yadukulakambhoji is a janya of Harikambhoji, the 28th melakarta raga. It is an audava-sampoorna raga with five swara-s in the arohana and all the seven occuring in serial order in the avarohana. The swara-s are shadja, chatusruti rishabha (ri), antara gandhara (gu), suddha madhyama (ma), panchama, chatusruti dhaivata (dhi) and kaisiki nishada (ni). The gandhara and nishada do not occur in the ascent.
