The tragedy of the rebel lovers

My suggestion (of course, it was highly speculative) in my earlier column that, perhaps, the ‘kootru’ in the ancient grammatical work Tolkappiyam could have later become ‘koothu’ indicating ‘theatre’ has stirred up a hornet’s nest. I was hauled up by one traditional Tamil scholar, who argued that Tolkappiyam had only reflected the way of real life of the Tamils in the past and that ‘the treasure-house of the ancient Tamil culture, which is what Tolkappiyam is’ could not have described a fictional life on the stage.
