The local point around
which many dancers rallied was of course Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, for its 10
days of Natyakala Conference (the ninth) with 20 lecture-demonstrations, and 33
performances of dance in the evenings as a part of its 34th Art and Pongal Dance
Festival.
R. Yegnaraman's
brain-child, the Conference convened by many scholars of great learning will in
time be considered the beginning of the renaissance of the interest of the
dancers, and the laity in the theoretical aspects of dance. Not a tall claim.
Just how many dance-oriented lecturedemonstrations were there in BC (Before
Conference)? A pitiful few. And maybe in one 'sabha', which always gave a
step-motherly treatment to dance. Today, many sabhas have dance-drawn lectures,
some even taking care that they happen on the days when SKGS' Conference has
gaps (on weekends and other holidays music concerts are tabled here).
