Music Appreciation Notes - Malayamarutam Raga

Malayamarutam is a janya, as well as an upanga
raga of Chakravakam, the 16th raga in the melakarta scheme. Its swarasthana-s
are the same as those for Chakravakam, but it does not have the madhyama in
either the ascent or the descent. The swara-s of Malayamarutam are: shadja,
suddha rishabha, antara gandhara, panchama, chatusruti dhaivata and kaisiki
nishada. Malayamarutam is a raga suited for rendering in the morning hours,
when it sounds with a special charm.
