Gaana Kairali - A workshop on Kerala composers

The Department of Carnatic Music, PSG College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore, organised an insightful one-day workshop titled Gaana Kairali on 12 September 2025, celebrating the rich legacy of Kerala vaggeyakaras and their contribution to Carnatic music. The workshop was conducted in the colleges’ veena hall.

    

The workshop was graced by vidushi N. J. Nandhini, Assistant Professor of Music, Maharaja’s College, Kochi, and a distinguished musician, who served as the resource person for the event. The inaugural session was presided over by T. Kannaian, Secretary and M. Senguttuvan, Principal i/c, PSG College of Arts & Science.

                 

The workshop aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the compositional and melodic intricacies of the kritis of eminent Kerala vaggeyakaras such as K. C. Kesava Pillai, Irayimman Thampi, Puthukode Krishnamoorthy, and Mahakavi Kuttamath Kunjikrishna Kurup. Through a blend of lecture and demonstration, the resource person Nandhini imparted valuable insights into the structural, lyrical, and raga–tala aspects of these compositions.

                  


The day concluded with a valedictory ceremony presided over by J. S. Bhuvaneshwaran, who distributed certificates and lauded the department’s efforts in preserving India’s musical heritage. S. Vijeyajaya, Head Department of Carnatic Music expressed gratitude to the PSG Management, faculty, and students for their support, as participants appreciated the enriching experience of learning from Kerala’s musical tradition.
